From mid-summer through to early autumn, Iranian Wood Sage sends up dozens of showy, tightly packed, upright flower spikes in a striking shade of deep magenta-purple. These dramatic blooms rise gracefully above a lush, tidy mound of soft, scalloped green leaves. When brushed against or warmed by the afternoon sun, the foliage releases a rich, herbal, sage-like aroma. Exceptionally easy to grow and virtually pest-free, it is the ultimate low-maintenance addition to cottage gardens, mixed borders, or decorative courtyard pots.

Growing Information (Australia):

• Scientific Name: Teucrium hircanicum

• Sowing Season:

  • Temperate/Cool (e.g., Tasmania): Spring to Early Summer (can also be started indoors in late winter to plant out after frost).

  • Subtropical/Tropical: Autumn and Winter.

• Position: Full sun to partial shade. Benefits from light afternoon shade in exceptionally hot, arid regions. Requires sharply well-drained soil; absolutely dislikes "wet feet".

• Sowing Depth: 2–3mm deep. Lightly press seeds into a high-quality seed-raising mix and cover with a very fine layer of grit or vermiculite.

• Spacing: 40–50cm apart.

• Germination: 14–21 days. Requires a warm, brightly lit position to trigger germination.

• Height & Spread: Grows 60–75cm tall with a 45–60cm spread

• Gardener’s Tip: To encourage a secondary flush of late-season blooms, cut back the spent flower spikes to the base of the stem as soon as they begin to fade. This plant will happily self-seed in favourable conditions, allowing you to easily naturalise it through gravel gardens or meadow beds.
