Jaune Flamme Tomato (translated from French as "Yellow Flame"). Originally bred in Helliner, France, this historic heirloom is legendary among tomato connoisseurs. It consistently ranks as an absolute top-tier winner in blind taste tests thanks to its complex, unforgettable flavour profile. If you are tired of bland, watery supermarket varieties, this prolific beauty will completely redefine what a homegrown tomato should taste like.
Jaune Flamme produces gorgeous, early-season clusters of golf-ball-sized, brilliant orange-apricot fruits. Slice one open to reveal a spectacular surprise: a thick, meaty outer wall enclosing a beautiful, contrasting red-mottled center. The flavour is a sensational, high-impact explosion of sugars and tart acidity, leaving a rich, fruity, citrus-like aftertaste. Highly versatile in the kitchen, these heavy-yielding vines pump out up to 6.5kg of fruit per plant, making them just as spectacular for roasting, drying, and rich pasta sauces as they are eaten warm straight off the vine.
Explosive Gourmet Flavour: A perfect, full-bodied balance of sweet and tart with an intense, fruity undertone.
High Yielding & Early Producer: Sets abundant clusters of 6 to 8 fruits very early in the season.
Nutritional Powerhouse: Luminous orange skin means it is packed with exceptional levels of beta-carotene and antioxidants.
Excellent Disease Resistance: A robust, vigorous French heirloom that naturally resists many common tomato diseases.
Drying & Roasting Star: Its dense, meaty walls retain an incredible, concentrated sweetness when dehydrated or sun-dried.
Scientific Name: Solanum lycopersicum 'Jaune Flamme'
Growth Habit: Indeterminate (Cordon). Requires a sturdy trellis, stake, or cage to support its vigorous climbing growth.
Sowing Season:
Temperate/Cool (e.g., Tasmania): Sow indoors with bottom heat from late winter to mid-spring (August to November). Transplant outdoors only after all risk of frost has passed and soil reaches 16°C+.
Subtropical: March to October (in frost-free zones).
Tropical: Late April to July.
Position: Full sun; requires an open, breezy spot to maximize health and fruit production.
Sowing Depth: 6mm deep.
Spacing: 50–65cm apart.
Germination: 7–14 days.
Harvest: 70–80 days from transplanting.
Gardener’s Tip: When transplanting out into the garden, bury the seedlings deeply—right up to their first set of true leaves. Tomatoes can grow brand-new roots all along their buried stems, creating a massive, resilient root network. Feed regularly with a potassium-rich fertilizer once flowers appear, and prune out the side shoots (laterals) to maintain a clean, productive framework.
