If left to mature fully on the vine, the skin hardens into a deep forest-green shell splashed with warm golden-orange accents. Mature fruits develop a dense, sweet, nutty flesh that is divine for winter soups, baking, and roasting, and their thick outer rind gives them superior long-term storage qualities through the cold months.

  • Growth Habit: Vigorous trailing vine. Requires plenty of space to sprawl across garden beds or run along a sturdy boundary fence.

  • Sowing Season:

    • Temperate/Cool (e.g., Tasmania): Late Spring to Early Summer (October to December, once soil temperatures remain consistently above 18°C–20°C and all frost danger has passed).

    • Subtropical: Spring and Autumn.

    • Tropical: Late Autumn through Winter.

  • Position: Full sun. Thrives in warm, sheltered spots with heavy, compost-rich, sharply draining soil.

  • Sowing Depth: 2cm deep.

  • Spacing: 1–1.5 metres apart between plants.

  • Germination: 6–10 days.

  • Harvest: 50–60 days for young summer squash; 90–100 days for fully mature winter pumpkins.

  • Gardener’s Tip: To extend your harvest, pick young green fruits regularly throughout summer to encourage the vine to keep setting new flowers. Leave a final batch of pumpkins on the vine in late summer to mature fully until the vines begin to die back and the stalks turn hard and woody. Cure mature pumpkins in a sunny, warm, dry spot for 7–10 days before storing them for winter use.
