Bring an iconic Australian garden favorite to your backyard patch with Jap Pumpkin (also widely known as Kent Pumpkin). A cornerstone of vegetable gardens across the country, this outstanding Cucurbita moschata variety is celebrated for its reliable productivity, exceptional heat tolerance, and rich, chestnut-like flavor.
These pumpkins produce striking, medium-to-large ribbed fruits featuring a distinctive green skin mottled with grey, yellow, and bronze-speckled patches. Beneath its tough, protective rind lies deep orange, fine-grained flesh that is naturally sweet, nutty, and dry-textured—never watery. Its dense flesh holds its shape beautifully during cooking, making it the ultimate selection for roasting to caramelized perfection, blending into silky winter soups, mashing with butter, or baking into savory pies and pasties. Exceptional long-term storage qualities ensure that a successful harvest will keep your pantry well-stocked throughout the cooler months.
Rich, Sweet Flavor: Boasts a deep, nutty sweetness and dense, creamy texture that sets the standard for Australian culinary pumpkins.
Exceptional Storage Life: Tough, protective rind allows mature fruits to store easily for up to 5 to 6 months in a cool, dry pantry.
Heat & Mildew Tolerant: As a Cucurbita moschata species, it exhibits superior natural resistance to powdery mildew and thrives in hot summer weather.
High Culinary Versatility: Holds its form without becoming soggy, making it perfect for roasting, soups, gnocchi, and baking.
Generous Yields: Strong, resilient vines produce heavy crops of nutritious fruits rich in beta-carotene, vitamin A, and fiber.
Scientific Name: Cucurbita moschata 'Jap' (syn. 'Kent')
Growth Habit: Vigorous trailing vine. Requires ample space to spread across the ground or grow up heavy garden structures.
Sowing Season:
Temperate/Cool (e.g., Tasmania, Victoria): Late Spring to Early Summer (October to December, after all frost risk has passed and soil temperature is consistently above 20°C).
Subtropical: Spring and Autumn.
Tropical: Autumn through Winter (avoiding mid-summer heavy rains).
Position: Full sun. Demands rich, fertile soil heavily conditioned with well-rotted compost or manure.
Sowing Depth: 2cm deep.
Spacing: 1–1.5 metres apart between plants; 2 metres between rows.
Germination: 6–10 days at warm soil temperatures (21°C–32°C).
Harvest: 110–120 days from sowing.
Gardener’s Tip: To ensure long storage life, allow the pumpkins to mature fully on the vine until the connecting stem turns dry, hard, and corky. Harvest by cutting the stem with sharp secateurs, leaving 5cm of stem attached to the fruit. Cure the harvested pumpkins in a sunny, warm, and well-ventilated spot for 7–10 days prior to storing them in a cool, dark place.
