Do you want to Grow Massive, Exhibition-Sized Heirloom Pumpkins
Turn your vegetable patch into a local spectacle with Big Max Pumpkin. If you have ever dreamed of growing a truly colossal pumpkin for autumn competitions, giant jack-o'-lanterns, or simply to amaze your neighbours, this legendary heirloom is the definitive choice for maximum scale and robust growth.
Under the right conditions, 'Big Max' can easily grow monster fruits weighing anywhere from 45kg to over 100kg! These pumpkins are impressively round with a bright, luminous orange skin that develops attractive, light ribbing. But it isn't just a prize-winning novelty—the flesh inside is up to 10cm thick, bright yellow-orange, and possesses a lovely sweet flavor. It is a fantastic dual-purpose variety that yields gallons of delicious base for pumpkin pies, winter stews, and roasted seeds, all while providing the ultimate canvas for grand-scale Halloween carving.
True Giant Scale: Bred specifically to produce exhibition-sized pumpkins that reliably turn heads.
Thick, Sweet Flesh: Excellent culinary quality with deep, fine-grained flesh that is perfect for bulk baking and freezing.
The Ultimate Carving Pumpkin: Provides a massive, sturdy canvas for creating show-stopping jack-o'-lanterns.
Vigorous & Resilient Vines: Exceptionally strong vines designed to support and feed rapid, heavy fruit development.
Fun for the Family: An incredible, rewarding project to grow with children, tracking the daily growth of a garden giant.
Scientific Name: Cucurbita maxima 'Big Max'
Sowing Season:
Temperate/Cool (e.g., Tasmania): Late Spring to Early Summer (soil temperature must consistently be above 20°C; protect early vines from late frost).
Subtropical/Tropical: Late Autumn through Winter.
Position: Full sun. Requires a massive growing area for vines to spread and an abundance of rich, organic matter.
Sowing Depth: 2.5cm–3cm deep.
Spacing: 1.5–2 metres apart between plants.
Germination: 5–10 days.
Harvest: 110–120 days. Harvest before the first heavy winter frost when the vine begins to die back and the stem turns hard and woody.
Exhibition Tip: To grow a true monster, restrict each vine to just one single pumpkin. Select the finest, fastest-growing fruit early on and pinch off all other flowers and competing pumpkins. Feed the plant weekly with a liquid organic fertilizer and keep the soil deeply and consistently watered.
