Painted mountain Corn
Zea mays.
This ancient corn, believed to be grown by Native Americans and pioneering families of the US, is cold hardy and can be ground for flour or grown purely for its ornamental colours. Early maturing mountain corn to grow in cooler climates Suitable for growing in garden plots or raised beds. .Great for cornmeal. Resilient, diverse, and adaptable, this is the survivalist corn one that will withstand the coming climate crisis.
Saved from extinction by Montana farmer Dave Christensen who says..."Painted Mountain grows fast even in cold climates where other corns struggle to stay alive in early spring. It also pollinates and fills out ears during the searing heat of the dry Montana summer. It takes 100 days to mature as dry grain in my cold mountain climate, about 2-4 weeks ahead of other "90-day" corn. This is very good for an early corn in a stressed location. I have gotten good production reports from every part of the USA, and many parts of the world, from Siberia to South Africa. Painted Mountain will grow food where many varieties will fail. Farmers find it an efficient food source if grazed by livestock right off the field. The lack of woodiness in the stalks and soft starch of the grain gives it a higher digestibility to animals than other corns. The highly nutritious grain promises to have many uses for humans and farm animals.
