This traditional Japanese bunching onion (also known as a scallion or Welsh onion) is world-renowned for its incredible frost hardiness and its ability to produce long, thick, succulent white stalks that remain tender even in the depths of winter.
Unlike common spring onions that remain slender, ‘Ishikura’ is a giant of the bunching world. It produces upright, non-bulbing stalks with beautiful, dark-green hollow tops. The flavor is clean and mild with a subtle sweetness, making it indispensable for fresh salads, miso soups, stir-fries, and as a gourmet garnish. Because it is a perennial bunching variety, it is exceptionally easy to grow and provides a reliable, high-yielding harvest when other garden greens are dormant.

Sowing Season: * Temperate/Cool: All year round; particularly successful when sown in late Summer/Autumn for Winter harvest.

Sowing Depth: 5mm–1cm deep.

Spacing: 5cm apart in rows 20cm apart. (Thinning is not strictly necessary if harvesting as bunching onions).

Germination: 10–14 days.

Harvest: 60–80 days.

Gardener’s Tip: To achieve longer, blanched white stems, "hill up" the soil around the base of the plants as they grow, just as you would with leeks. This keeps the lower stalk protected from the sun, resulting in more of that tender, juicy white flesh.
