(Abelmoschus esculentus)

Originally developed by the Campbell Soup Company in 1950, this outstanding heirloom remains a premier favorite among home gardeners and market growers alike. Known for its exceptional productivity and robust growth, it is a spectacular summer workhorse that thrives in full sun when other vegetable crops begin to flag. What sets 'Emerald' apart from standard ribbed varieties is its exceptionally sleek, round, and smooth dark green pods. Because it lacks deep ridges, it cuts into perfect, uniform wheels that are ideal for culinary presentation. Even better, it is an entirely spineless cultivar, meaning you won't have to battle prickles during harvest. The pods retain their tender, crisp, and completely stringless texture even when growing to longer lengths. Boasting a mild, buttery, and versatile flavor profile, Emerald Okra is the superior selection for slicing into authentic Creole gumbos, flash-frying, roasting, or creating crunchy homemade pickles

Growing Information (Australia):

  • Scientific Name: Abelmoschus esculentus 'Emerald

  • Sowing Season:

    • Temperate/Cool (e.g., Tasmania): Late Spring to Early Summer (strictly after all frost danger has passed and soil temperature is consistently over 18°C–20°C).

    • Subtropical/Tropical: Early Spring through to Autumn (can be grown year-round in frost-free northern zones).

    • Position: Full sun (requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily). Prefers rich, well-draining soil with plenty of added organic compost.

    • Sowing Depth: 1cm deep.

    • Spacing: 30–45cm apart between plants; 90cm apart between rows.

    • Germination: 5–14 days.
    • Harvest: 50–60 days from planting
    • Gardener’s Tip: Okra seeds have a hard outer coating. Soak the seeds in warm water for 6 hours prior to planting to soften the coat and drastically boost germination rates. To keep the plant producing continuously, harvest the pods early and often (ideally when they are 7–10cm long) using pruners. Frequent picking encourages the plant to pump out a steady supply of new blossoms and pods all season long.
