(Tropaeolum majus)

Nasturtium ‘Purple Emperor’. A stunning departure from the traditional bright oranges and yellows, this heirloom variety features unique, dusky rose-purple blooms that fade to  as they age.

The 'Purple Emperor' is a versatile, easy-to-grow annual with a neat, trailing habit. Its cool-toned flowers contrast beautifully against the lush, rounded, lily-pad-like green foliage. Not only is it a visual masterpiece, but every part of the plant is edible—the flowers add a peppery, watercress-like kick to salads and garnishes, while the young leaves and seeds can be used as a zesty addition to pestos or pickled like capers.

  • Unique Colour Palette: Striking antique purple and rose tones rarely seen in nasturtiums.

  • Dual-Purpose Beauty: A stunning ornamental plant that doubles as a gourmet edible.

  • Garden Protector: Functions as an excellent "trap crop," naturally drawing aphids away from your prized vegetables.

  • Low Maintenance: Thrives in poorer soils and requires very little fuss once established.

  • Pollinator Magnet: Highly attractive to bees and butterflies, bringing movement and life to your garden.

Growing Information:

  • Scientific Name: Tropaeolum majus 'Purple Emperor'

  • Sowing Season: Spring and Summer (after the last frost). In frost-free areas, can be sown year-round.

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade. (Full sun produces the most flowers).

  • Sowing Depth: 1.5cm – 2cm (Seeds are large and easy to handle).

  • Spacing: 20–30cm apart.

  • Germination: 7–14 days.

  • Flowering: Approximately 8–10 weeks from sowing.

  • Soil Tip: Avoid over-fertilizing! Nasturtiums actually bloom better in "lean" or poor soil. Too much nitrogen will result in lots of leaves but fewer flowers
