Heirloom crisphead variety that is a true garden workhorse, originally developed to stand up to the heat of the summer while maintaining a tight, glass-like crunch that modern, supermarket varieties simply cannot replicate.
‘Great Lakes’ is for those who crave a classic, refreshing iceberg-style lettuce. It produces large, heavy, and tightly folded heads with an attractive, frilled-edge appearance. Unlike delicate leaf lettuces, this variety holds its crisp, juicy texture long after harvest. It is slow-to-bolt and remarkably resistant to tip-burn, making it a reliable performer even as temperatures begin to climb. Whether you’re crafting the base of a classic garden salad or stacking crisp leaves onto a homemade burger, ‘Great Lakes’ delivers a clean, sweet, and satisfying snap in every bite.
Unrivalled Crispness: Famous for its dense, firm texture and refreshing, watery snap.
Heat-Tolerant Reliability: Specifically bred for better performance in warmer conditions, extending your lettuce harvest into the shoulder seasons.
Slow-to-Bolt: Maintains quality for longer in the garden, giving you more time to harvest perfectly matured heads.
Uniform & Productive: Forms large, solid, beautifully frilled heads that are consistent in size and quality.
Versatile Kitchen Staple: The quintessential "crunch" lettuce—perfect for salads, sandwiches, and wraps.
Scientific Name: Lactuca sativa 'Great Lakes'
Sowing Season: * Temperate/Cool (e.g., Tasmania): Early Spring through to Late Autumn.
Subtropical/Tropical: Autumn and Winter.
Position: Full sun to partial shade (protect from intense afternoon heat in mid-summer). Prefers rich, nitrogen-balanced soil.
Sowing Depth: Surface sow (lettuce seeds need light to germinate)—barely press into soil.
Spacing: 30–40cm apart.
Germination: 7–10 days.
Harvest: 75–85 days from sowing.
Gardener’s Tip: Lettuce seeds are tiny and heat-sensitive; if sowing in warm weather, keep the seed tray in a cool, shaded spot until germination occurs. Practice succession planting by sowing a small pinch of seeds every 2–3 weeks to ensure a continuous supply of fresh, crisp heads throughout the season.
