Lettuce ‘Crisp Mint’ Seeds

Lettuce ‘Crisp Mint’ (Lactuca sativa), a standout heirloom romaine-type lettuce celebrated for its intensely savoyed, mint-green leaves and exceptional texture. True to its name, 'Crisp Mint' produces upright, dense heads packed with sweet, tender leaves that feature a satisfying, juicy crunch—without a trace of bitterness.

Selected for its high adaptability and slow-to-bolt nature, 'Crisp Mint' performs admirably through unpredictable spring and summer weather when other romaine varieties struggle. Its unique, ruffled leaf margins hold salad dressings exceptionally well, making it a favorite for gourmet farm-to-table salads, homestead Caesar bowls, and fresh sandwiches.

Features:

• Gourmet Texture & Flavor: Exceptionally sweet, crisp, and juicy with zero bitterness.

• Slow to Bolt: Superior heat resistance extends your harvest window into the warmer months.

• Striking Savoyed Leaves: Distinctive mint-green, crinkled foliage that holds salad dressings beautifully.

• Cut-and-Come-Again Versatility: Harvest outer leaves for continuous harvests or wait for full, upright heads.

• Compact & Productive: Ideal for raised beds, traditional garden rows, and container gardens.

Growing Information (Australia):

• Scientific Name: Lactuca sativa 'Crisp Mint'

• Plant Type: Cool-to-Warm Season Annual

• Growth Habit: Upright Rosette / Cos-Romaine Type (Non-vining)

• Sowing Season:

  • Temperate/Cool (e.g., Victoria, Tasmania): Spring and Autumn (sow successionally every 2–3 weeks for ongoing harvests; protect from mid-summer heat extremes).

  • Subtropical: Autumn through Early Spring.

  • Tropical: Autumn to Early Winter (grow in cool, partially shaded positions).

• Sun Position: Full Sun to Partial Shade (appreciates light afternoon shade in warmer shoulder seasons).

• Sowing Depth: 3mm–5mm deep (Cover lightly; lettuce seeds require light exposure to break dormancy and germinate cleanly).

• Plant Spacing: 20cm–25cm apart for full heads (10cm–15cm for baby leaf harvest).

• Plant Height: 25cm–30cm tall.

• Germination Temp: 12°C–20°C (germination drops significantly in soil temperatures above 24°C).

• Germination Time: 7–12 days.

• Seed to Bloom/Harvest Time: 30–35 days for baby leaf; 50–60 days for mature upright heads.

• Gardener’s Tip: Direct sow or transplant seedlings into rich, free-draining soil amended with well-rotted compost. Keep the soil consistently moist to maintain juicy leaf crispness and prevent heat stress. Harvest early in the morning when moisture content is highest for maximum vase life and leaf crunch.
