Phaseolus Vulgaris

Add a rare, highly productive gem to your kitchen patch. A true favorite among heirloom collectors, this unique variety is celebrated for producing plump, kidney-shaped beans patterned with stunning, earthy shades of orange, tan, pink, and beige. It is as visually delightful in the harvest basket as it is exceptional on the dinner plate.

Although a bush bean we found that this variety did still like to climb a little so worked perfectly combines with corn in a three sisters system. This variety is a heavy producer of premium quality, high-protein "pills" that hold their texture beautifully when cooked. With a rich, creamy, and satisfyingly dense flavor profile, it serves as the ultimate homegrown base for smoky home-baked beans, slow-simmered winter soups, slow-cooker chillis, and gourmet nacho dips.

Growing Information (Australia):

  • Scientific Name: Phaseolus vulgaris 'Jack Rabbit'

  • Sowing Season:

    • Temperate/Cool (e.g., Tasmania): Late Spring to Mid-Summer (October to January, strictly after all risk of frost has passed).

    • Subtropical: August to November, and again in April.

    • Tropical: March to August.
    • Position: Full sun. Prefers rich, organic-rich, sharply well-drained soil with a pH between 6.2 and 7.0.
    • Sowing Depth: 1–2cm deep, planted directly into the ground.
    • Spacing: 10cm apart between plants
    • Germination: 7–10 days.
    • Harvest: Approximately 105 days for dry shelling beans.
    • Gardener’s Tip: Beans can be sensitive to rot if overwatered early on. Moisten your soil well before planting, direct-sow your seeds, and do not water them again until the first green shoots emerge from the soil. While they grow on a bush habit, providing a simple, low twiggy framework or light stakes keeps the heavy clusters of pods off wet soil and prevents pest damage.

Please be kind with our bean seeds and do not order all the limited packets for yourself so others may enjoy these beans. We respectfully ask people to order no more than two packets per family.
