Dipper Gourd (Lagenaria siceraria). Grown for centuries across the globe, this fascinating heirloom vine produces large, smooth, light-green gourds featuring a distinctive bulbous base attached to a long, slender neck.
While young fruits can be harvested tender for culinary use in Asian-inspired dishes, Dipper Gourds are overwhelmingly prized for crafting. Allowed to dry and harden on the vine, their outer shell transforms into a tough, durable, wood-like rind. Once cured, these gourds are easily hollowed out and converted into functional water dippers, ladles, birdhouses, canteen vessels, and unique hand-painted rustic art pieces. Supported by a sturdy trellis, the vigorous, sprawling vines create a lush vertical display filled with fragrant, large white night-blooming flowers that attract nocturnal pollinators.
Ultimate Crafting Plant: Cured gourds turn into durable, woody shells perfect for ladles, birdhouses, bowls, and DIY art projects.
Vigorous & Productive: Rapidly growing vines provide excellent summer shade and screening when trained up trellises or arbors.
Fragrant Night Blooms: Features striking, large white blossoms that open in the late afternoon and evening, filling the air with a sweet scent.
Fun Family Project: A wonderful educational crop for children to grow, harvest, dry, paint, and craft.
Unique Vertical Accent: Hanging heavy gourds create an incredible visual show stopper in any vegetable or cottage garden layout.
Scientific Name: Lagenaria siceraria
Plant Type: Annual Vine
Sowing Season:
Temperate/Cool (e.g., Victoria, Tasmania): Spring to Early Summer (October to December, once all risk of frost has passed and soil is warm).
Subtropical: Late Winter to Late Summer.
Tropical: Autumn through to Spring.
Sun Position: Full Sun (requires 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily in a warm, sheltered spot).
Sowing Depth: 2cm deep (sow seeds on edge to prevent water pooling and seed rot).
Plant Spacing: 1–1.5 metres apart between plants.
Plant Height / Vine Length: 3–5 metres (vigorous climbing vine).
Germination Temp: 21°C–30°C.
Germination Time: 7–14 days (nicking the tough seed coat or soaking in warm water for 12 hours prior to sowing speeds up sprouting).
Seed to Bloom/Harvest Time: 110–130 days.
Gardener’s Tip: For long, perfectly straight necks suitable for crafting dippers, grow vines vertically on a heavy-duty arbor or sturdy trellis so fruits hang freely. If left to grow along the ground, the necks will naturally curve into twisted shapes. Leave gourds on the vine until the stems turn brown and woody. Harvest before frost, leaving a short stem attached, and hang them in a dry, well-ventilated spot to cure for 1–3 months until the seeds rattle inside.
