Elecampane (Elf Dock )

Elecampane (Inula helenium), or Elf Dock, is an herbaceous perennial native to Europe and Central Asia. This impressive plant has giant yellow flowers and octopus-like roots that can be harvested in the fall of its second year of growth. With traditional uses for bronchial infection, pneumonia, and debilitating, chronic cough, Elecampane also yields a blue dye. Plant in part shade and moist soil for best results, and expect germination in 12 days after sowing in early spring.
